History

Historical Context

Founded in 1413 by papal bull, the University of St Andrews has elected a rector since the Universities (Scotland) Act 1858 required the post for the four ancient Scottish universities. The rector, who chairs the University Court, is chosen by matriculated students every three years. The 1 November 2026 election continues this centuries-old democratic tradition.
