History

Historical Context

During the 1984-85 Iran-Iraq Tanker War, Iran began targeting Kuwaiti tankers, prompting Kuwait to request U.S. protection in December 1986. The United States re-flagged the ships and launched Operation Earnest Will on 24 July 1987, escorting dozens of tankers until 26 September 1988. The 2026 Strait of Hormuz attacks on twelve vessels echo that escort-based security model.
