Family Farmstead Dairy Recalls Raw Mild Cheddar Over Possible E. coli Contamination

By Drooid · · How we work

Recall Announcement and Affected Product

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a notice on October 15, 2026 that Family Farmstead Dairy is recalling a single lot of its Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese. The product is sold in 8-ounce packages bearing the lot code “7/22/27” and a matching best-by date “7/22/27.”

Distribution and Consumer Guidance

According to the FDA notice and the company’s own statement, the recalled cheese was shipped to grocery stores in New York and New Jersey; US Today adds that it also reached Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts and may have spread further through distributors. Family Farmstead Dairy reports that no illnesses or allergic reactions have been linked to the cheese. Consumers who purchased the product are advised to discard it or return it for a full refund and to clean any surfaces that contacted the cheese with hot, soapy water.

Raw Milk Cheese Risks

Raw milk cheese is made from unpasteurized milk, which can harbor harmful bacteria that pasteurization would normally destroy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that infections with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (including O157:H7) can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and, in vulnerable populations, hemolytic uremic syndrome—a potentially life-threatening kidney condition.

Official Response from Family Farmstead Dairy and the FDA

Family Farmstead Dairy confirmed the recall, emphasizing that the issue is limited to the identified lot and that no reported cases have occurred. The FDA’s notice, posted on October 15, 2026, cites laboratory testing that detected two strains of E. coli, including O157:H7, in the sampled cheese. The agency has not linked the recall to any broader outbreak.
