History

Historical Context

UEFA introduced Financial Fair Play in 2009 to force clubs to balance books, prompting early fines for United, Liverpool and Arsenal. A decade later, Manchester City’s 2009-2018 spending was judged to have hidden about £900 million in equity as sponsorship, leading the Premier League in 2026 to charge the club with 95 breaches and threaten points deductions.
