History

Historical Context

The 2005 UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul, where Liverpool overturned a 3-0 halftime deficit to win on penalties, reshaped European football expectations. Liverpool’s comeback featured Steven Gerrard’s 60th-minute equaliser and a 120-second goal surge, delivering a 3-2 aggregate victory and £12 million prize money. Similarly, Barcelona’s 5-2 triumph over Real Betis and Venezia’s 1-0 upset of Napoli echo that era’s surprise turnarounds, with VAR-reviewed goals and red-card incidents shaping outcomes. These parallels remind clubs that dramatic comebacks and officiating scrutiny can alter league standings, prompting tighter disciplinary protocols and strategic squad rotations.
