Pitt Turns to True Freshman Quarterback Ahead of Boston College Clash

By Drooid · · How we work

Recent Season Overview and Setback

Pittsburgh began the 2026 college-football season with a 5-1 record, posting five straight victories that included 59-point blowouts over Miami (Ohio) and Bucknell, as well as wins against UCF, Syracuse and at Virginia Tech. The Panthers’ momentum stalled last weekend when North Carolina defeated them 21-17 at home. Pitt led at halftime, but the offense faltered in the second half, and the defense exposed the limitations of backup quarterback Holden Geriner, who had taken over after starter Mason Heintschel tore his ACL in the prior game against Virginia Tech.

Quarterback Change Before Boston College

In response to the loss, head coach Pat Narduzzi announced that true freshman Corey Dailey will start at quarterback against Boston College on Saturday. Dailey, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound recruit from Seguin, Texas, joined Pitt in January after graduating from Seguin High School. He was a four-star prospect ranked No. 13 nationally in the 2026 class by 247Sports and chose Pittsburgh over offers from Texas State, UT-San Antonio, San Diego State, Tulane and others.

Player Profiles and Recent Statistics

  • Corey Dailey – Set Seguin High records with 9,138 passing yards and 100 passing touchdowns, accounting for 122 total touchdowns in his high-school career. As a senior, he threw for 2,921 yards and 22 touchdowns while rushing for 660 yards and 13 scores. At Pitt, he appeared in the 59-0 win over Bucknell, completing 3 of 5 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.
  • Holden Geriner – The fifth-year senior transfer completed 27 of 44 passes for 219 yards against North Carolina, recording no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Impact on Pitt’s ACC Campaign

With a 2-1 ACC record, the Panthers remain in a strong position despite the recent defeat. Starting Dailey provides the team with a larger physical presence and a highly touted arm, which coaches hope will revitalize the passing attack and improve red-zone efficiency. The upcoming game at Boston College offers Pitt a chance to rebound and maintain its standing in the conference as the season progresses.
