History

Historical Context

Operation Cast Lead, launched by the Israel Defense Forces on 27 December 2008 and ending 18 January 2009, killed roughly 1,200-1,400 Palestinians and destroyed over 46,000 homes, displacing more than 100,000 people. UNRWA’s emergency response then faced massive reconstruction needs. The enduring cycle of Israeli-Palestinian hostilities has repeatedly produced similar humanitarian emergencies, driving renewed calls for cash-based aid.
