History

Historical Context

The FA launched the Women’s Super League in 2011, selecting eight clubs—including Arsenal and Birmingham—to replace the Premier League National Division, with the inaugural season running from 13 April to 28 August. Arsenal won the first title, their eighth straight English championship, while Birmingham finished runners-up and earned a Champions League place. That structure still underpins today’s match, as Arsenal chase Manchester City’s lead.
