History

Historical Context

Since the NBA-backed WNBA launched with eight franchises on June 21 1997, early player signings—like Sheryl Swoopes as the league’s first—spurred roster turnover that defined its growth. The 2026 trade of Angel Reese to the Atlanta Dream for two first-round picks echoes those initial moves, propelling the Dream to the 2026 Finals and illustrating the league’s lasting reliance on strategic acquisitions.
