History

Historical Context

In March 1999, NATO launched Operation Allied Force, deploying over 1,000 aircraft, including U.S. F-16s, to enforce a no-fly zone over Yugoslavia. The campaign logged 10,600 sorties and dropped more than 2,000 tons of ordnance, demonstrating coalition air power’s rapid response. Today, Romanian Air Force pilots under Defense Minister Radu Miruta used F-16s to down two drones near Sulina, echoing NATO’s earlier fighter interceptions. This parallel underscores how legacy Cold-War air-defense frameworks, reinforced by NATO integration, now shape Eastern Europe’s response to unmanned threats in the Black Sea.
