Summary

Streeting Meets Hegseth

Britain’s Defence Secretary Wes Streeting met U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon on 15 October.
Streeting said Britain is undertaking its biggest sustained defence-spending increase since the Cold War.
Both officials urged faster translation of defence innovation into operational capability.
Hegseth highlighted the need for reliable supply chains and allied industrial cooperation.
Hegseth introduced NATO 3.0, proposing European members assume primary conventional-defence responsibility.

History

Historical Context

In 1999 NATO launched the 78-day Operation Allied Force, flying 26,095 sorties and relying on U.S. and British satellite and air assets to force Yugoslav withdrawal from Kosovo. That campaign marked NATO’s first major strike without UN Security Council approval and proved that trans-Atlantic tech integration could shape outcomes. Today’s Starlink limits on Ukrainian drones and Britain’s NATO 3.0 push draw directly on that precedent.
