OpenAI Engineer Accused of Planting Hidden Recording Device in Executive Conference Room

Incident Overview
Federal prosecutors allege that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi-national engineer hired by OpenAI in July of the previous year, used prompts submitted to an internal chatbot to design a thumb-size audio-visual recording device. The device, described as a microcontroller with a detachable camera and microphone and listed for $24 on Amazon, was reportedly found folded in toilet-paper and plugged into the back of a television in an executive conference room at OpenAI’s San Francisco office in late September. OpenAI’s security team discovered the device, recovered no files from its microSD card, and subsequently identified Alfozan as the likely source using the company’s own AI tools.
Background of the Engineer
Alfozan studied computer science and engineering at MIT, completed a master’s in data science at UC Berkeley, and held engineering roles at Meta, Akamai, SAP, and Microsoft. He later co-founded logistics startup Nash and became a venture partner at RAED Ventures in Riyadh, joining the firm around the same time Prince Khalid bin Bader Al Saud was added as a partner. After obtaining U.S. permanent residency in 2020, Alfozan was hired by OpenAI in July. In a recent Arabic-language podcast, he described growing up in Dammam and receiving career advice from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a 2016 Bay Area visit.
OpenAI’s Response
In a post on X, OpenAI said it had uncovered a “sophisticated recording device,” used its own product to trace the source, terminated Alfozan’s employment, and referred the matter to the FBI. OpenAI also emphasized that its security program is designed to protect against insider threats, cybercriminals, and nation-state actors.
Legal Proceedings
The Department of Justice arrested Alfozan recently and charged him with violating a federal recording statute. The complaint states that Alfozan lacked authority to book the executive conference room, which is reserved for senior leaders and their assistants, and that CCTV captured him near the room in early October. His attorney, William Pernik, asserted that Alfozan “poses no flight risk,” has “long-standing ties to the community,” and is being charged solely for the recording violation, not as a foreign agent.
