History

Historical Context

In the 1991 Gulf War Iraq launched 88 Scud missiles, 47 of which struck Saudi Arabia, prompting the coalition to deploy Patriot batteries that intercepted a portion of the attacks and protected both Saudi and Israeli targets. The limited success convinced Riyadh to expand its missile shield, leading today to PAC-3 and British Sky Sabre systems as part of a multibillion-dollar defense buildup.
