Historical Context

On 14 October 2006, Chelsea’s Petr Cech suffered a depressed skull fracture after colliding with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt, forcing him out for three months. The injury sparked calls for better goalkeeper protection and later helped drive Premier League concussion protocols. Today, those rules let clubs assess injuries quickly, as seen with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and England keeper Jordan Pickford.
