History

Historical Context

On September 1 2007, No. 5 Michigan Wolverines fell 34-32 to unranked Appalachian State before a crowd of 109,218 at Michigan Stadium. The Mountaineers became only the second FCS team to defeat a ranked FBS opponent, echoing Cincinnati’s 1983 upset, and prompted the AP to allow FCS schools in its poll, reshaping how underdogs are evaluated.
