History

Historical Context

California signed AB 730 on 3 October 2019, the nation’s first law requiring political deep-fake ads to carry a disclaimer; Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez secured a 44-33 Assembly vote. The bill followed earlier federal attempts such as the 2019 Deepfakes Accountability Act introduced by Rep. Yvette Clarke. Recent AI-generated clips by Sen. Marsha Blackburn have revived the law’s relevance nationwide.
