History

Historical Context

In June 1975 President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, on Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s advice, declared a national Emergency that suspended elections and civil liberties for 21 months. The Janata Party, led by Jayaprakash Narayan, mobilized mass protests and the regime imprisoned over 100,000 opponents, prompting later constitutional amendments that curbed executive power. Those reforms shape today’s Election Commission response to Congress-led rallies that recall the 1975 demonstrations.
