History

Historical Context

In 1997, the inaugural WNBA season culminated with the Houston Comets capturing the first championship, defeating the New York Liberty 65-51. Cynthia Cooper led Houston, averaging 22.3 points per game and posting a 30-point performance in the title clincher, while league attendance topped 12,000 per game. Similarly, the 2026 Finals saw the Golden State Valkyries overturn Atlanta Dream’s 10-game streak, with Gabby Williams’ 26 points echoing Cooper’s decisive scoring. The early league’s success established a precedent for franchise moves and star-driven narratives, foreshadowing the Dream’s 2027 relocation to State Farm Arena.
