On opening day Japan stunned South Africa 34-32, a result widely considered the tournament’s biggest upset and highlighted Japan’s emergence as a competitive force. The shock contributed to World Rugby’s 2009 decision to award Japan the 2019 tournament, expanding the sport’s global reach.
