History

Historical Context

On 6 October 2002 al-Qaeda operatives detonated an explosives-laden boat against the French-flagged MV Limburg off Yemen, killing one crew member, injuring twelve and spilling about 90,000 barrels of crude. The attack crippled Gulf-Aden shipping and spurred international naval patrols. A similar small-boat RPG strike reported by the UKMTO near Jubail in 2024 revives those security concerns.
