History

Historical Context

In February 2005 President Hosni Mubarak asked Parliament to amend Article 76; on 10 May it passed 405-34, allowing Egypt’s first multi-candidate presidential election. The September vote returned Mubarak for a six-year term with 88.6% of the official vote. President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi invoked the 2019 constitutional clause to keep the 2030 deadline, extending the pattern of constitutional changes to preserve incumbency.
