History

Historical Context

Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea reshaped regional security, prompting NATO to prioritize Black Sea stability and collective defense commitments across the alliance. Following the takeover, Russia stationed roughly 30,000 troops on the peninsula, bolstering its Black Sea Fleet and strategic air-defence installations. Today, Romanian F-16s from Borcea Air Base downed two Russian-made Geran drones, while NATO ministers from Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey discuss heightened Black Sea deterrence. These incidents reinforce the enduring strategic contest, urging deeper NATO air-defence integration and expanded maritime security patrols to safeguard commercial shipping.
