History

Historical Context

During the 1941-44 siege of Leningrad, Nazi Germany and Finland sealed the city on 8 September 1941, causing about 1.5 million civilian deaths over 872 days. Historians label the blockade a genocide, a precedent cited today as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warns that Oleshky’s 24,000 residents have dwindled to 1,700 severely survivors facing starvation.
