Historical Context

The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, built by the Imperial Japanese Army from 1937 to 1943, has long carried the bulk of China-North Korea trade—over 70% by 2020. In 2026 Premier Li Qiang and Premier Pak Thae Song opened the New Yalu River Bridge downstream, reviving the historic corridor now subject to UN Security Council Resolution 2375 (2017) that bans North Korean overseas labor.
