History

Historical Context

Canada’s experience with massive wartime blasts began on 6 December 1917, when the ammunition ship Mont-Blanc exploded in Halifax Harbour, killing about 1,950 people and injuring roughly 9,000. The 2026 fire at CFB Wainwright, which forced Edmonton hospitals into code-orange, echoes that legacy, prompting Defence Minister David McGuinty to order upgraded fire-prevention measures and regional medical surge capacity.
