History

Historical Context

After Ukraine’s 2014 Revolution of Dignity, Russian forces seized Crimea in February, held a disputed March 16-17 referendum that reported 95 % support, and formally annexed the peninsula on March 18. The UN General Assembly condemned the move and the US, EU and NATO imposed sanctions. That annexation spurred Ukraine’s later drone attacks on St Petersburg oil depots, targeting Russian energy to pressure Moscow.
