Launch of Two-Way Yacht Travel
On October 16, Hong Kong held a ceremony to mark the first southbound voyages of Guangdong-registered yachts under a new cross-boundary travel scheme. The event was attended by Acting Financial Secretary Michael Wong, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan, and Director of Marine Wong Sai-fat, who presented silver salvers to participating yacht owners.
Policy Background and Infrastructure Plans
The southbound route follows the June launch of northbound yacht travel and a September agreement between the Guangdong and Hong Kong governments that created a formal mechanism for individual yacht visits. Hong Kong’s Marine Department has announced plans to build four new yacht clubs at the airport, Lamma Island, Aberdeen and Hung Hom, providing more than 1,100 berths and modern clubhouse facilities.
Streamlined Entry Procedures
Yacht owners may complete all Hong Kong entry formalities online up to 30 days before arrival. Six mainland control points—Nansha Ferry Terminal (Guangzhou), Shekou Cruise Homeport (Shenzhen), Shenzhen Airport Ferry Terminal, Jiuzhou Port Passenger Terminal (Zhuhai), Wanshan Port (Zhuhai) and Sunsea Yacht Club Marina (Zhongshan)—handle departure inspections. The Marine Department’s June measures also allow one-stop electronic processing, relaxed berth-booking requirements, and local-knowledge examinations conducted at two mainland centres and seven approved training institutions. To date, nearly 300 individuals have earned the required qualification.
Official Outlook
Acting Financial Secretary Michael Wong emphasized that the global superyacht market is projected to reach roughly $350 billion by 2032 and that Hong Kong aims to capture a share by promoting a “yacht economy.” He highlighted the upcoming Festival of Connoisseurs, an international superyacht exhibition slated for early November, as a showcase of Hong Kong’s growing role. The government pledged ongoing monitoring of yacht traffic and timely adjustments to facilitation measures.
Expected Economic Impact
Authorities anticipate that the new southbound route will draw more vessels from the Greater Bay Area and worldwide, injecting fresh demand into Hong Kong’s tourism sector and related industries. By simplifying cross-boundary navigation and expanding berth capacity, the scheme seeks to position Hong Kong as a leading hub for luxury yachting in Asia.
