Summary

Romania Deploys F-16s

Romania deployed three Block 70/72 F-16s to Italy for NATO’s Steadfast Noon 2026 exercise.
The Block 70/72 jets feature Lockheed Martin’s latest avionics and Northrop Grumman’s APG-83 AESA radar.
These airframes have a 12,000-hour structural life, supporting up to 40 years of service.
The ministry said Steadfast Noon involves only conventional capabilities and no nuclear weapons.
Romania shot down a drone over Estonia on 19 May using a fighter from Šiauliai, Lithuania.

History

Historical Context

In March 1999 NATO launched Operation Allied Force, a 78-day air campaign that flew 26,095 sorties and relied heavily on U.S. F-16s for SEAD missions against Yugoslav air defenses. The doctrine of aggressive air-defence proved durable; today Romania’s Block 70/72 F-16s, equipped with Northrop Grumman’s APG-83 AESA radar, are intercepting Russian-type Geran drones over the Black Sea, echoing the 1999 NATO thrust.
