History

Historical Context

In 1985, the brutal killing of PC Keith Blakelock during the Broadwater Farm riots shocked Britain and prompted a nationwide overhaul of police protective gear. The Home Office reported a £12 million investment that year, equipping officers with reinforced helmets and ballistic vests across England and Wales. Today, the Nottingham officer’s foot wound on Angel Row echoes the 1985 tragedy, highlighting persistent vulnerabilities despite decades of equipment upgrades. Continued incidents pressure the UK government to reassess funding and training for frontline officers.
