Subpoena Threats and Potential Depositions
The Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee has warned three tax-exempt organizations—The People’s Forum, BreakThrough News, and Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research—that they must turn over financial records or face individual depositions before Congress. The committee identified 21 people, including nonprofit executives, activists and journalists, as possible witnesses. Failure to comply could result in oath-bound testimony as early as the upcoming Tuesday.
Funding Network and Prior Investigations
Neville Roy Singham, an American-born tech entrepreneur who sold ThoughtWorks for an estimated $785 million in 2017 and now resides in Shanghai, is alleged to have channeled at least $278 million through shell companies and donor-advised funds into U.S. nonprofits. Fox News Digital traced $22.44 million to The People’s Forum, $16.76 million to Tricontinental, and $1.098 million to BreakThrough BT Media Inc., the parent of BreakThrough News—totaling roughly $40.3 million. The committee says the probe examines whether existing tax laws adequately guard against foreign-linked funding and whether legislative reforms are needed. Singham also faces a separate grand-jury investigation in the Southern District of New York for alleged wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering and related offenses; no criminal charges have been announced.
Official Statements & Responses
BreakThrough News responded that the subpoenas threaten First Amendment rights, arguing the demands exceed legitimate legislative authority. Attorneys for BreakThrough News and The People’s Forum filed formal objections in August, labeling the investigation a “witch-hunt” and comparing it to the House Un-American Activities Committee’s 1940s-1950s probes.
Criticism & Opposition
Prominent left-wing figures have denounced the effort as a modern McCarthyist attack. Both urged supporters to resist the investigation.
