Poll Shows Broad Public Backing
A Canada Pulse Insights poll of 1,531 adults indicates that 73 % of respondents want former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney to fast-track major infrastructure projects, ease certain environmental reviews, modify labour-strike rules and deepen economic ties with Europe. The poll reflects a nationwide appetite for sweeping changes to the country’s nation-building strategy.
Major Projects Office and Current Initiatives
The federal government has already moved several large-scale projects to the newly created Major Projects Office (MPO). Among the initiatives under MPO review is a new oil pipeline destined for the west coast. Six of the projects being considered are located in British Columbia, while four are in Ontario, including the Darlington New Nuclear Project in Bowmanville.
Regional and Party Support Breakdown
Support for Carney’s proposed agenda appears strong across provinces: 83 % in British Columbia, 77 % in Quebec, 73 % in Atlantic Canada, 71 % in Ontario, 67 % in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and 65 % in Alberta. Party preferences in the same poll show the Liberal Party receiving 46 % national support, compared with 34 % for the Conservative Party.
Potential Impact on Canadian Infrastructure Policy
If Carney’s recommendations are pursued, the MPO could accelerate the delivery of high-profile projects, potentially reshaping Canada’s energy and nuclear landscapes. Faster approvals and relaxed environmental reviews may shorten timelines for pipelines and nuclear facilities, while altered labour-strike regulations could affect union negotiations. Deeper economic ties with Europe suggest a strategic pivot that could diversify trade relationships. The poll’s strong endorsement signals public willingness to accept these reforms, though the long-term fiscal and environmental consequences remain subjects for further analysis.
