History

Historical Context

In 1981 Wimbledon, John McEnroe defeated five-time champion Björn Borg on 4 July to claim his first Wimbledon and third Grand Slam title, after his famous “You cannot be serious!” outburst on 22 June. The 2024 Shanghai Masters incident involving Rafael Jodar shows the ATP’s ongoing enforcement of player-conduct rules that began with high-profile disputes like McEnroe’s.
