In November 2023 Chennai entered a red alert as Parry’s Corner recorded 36 cm of rain, echoing the 1 December 2015 flood that dumped 49.4 cm in 24 hours and killed more than 1,000 people. The 2015 disaster spurred the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority to revamp drainage, while the Indian Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Response Force now coordinate rescue and pump operations.
