History

Historical Context

On November 21 1980 a fire ignited in the MGM Grand Hotel’s restaurant, killing 85 people and becoming Nevada’s deadliest disaster. The tragedy, following earlier hotel blazes such as the 1946 Winecoff Hotel fire and preceding the 1981 Las Vegas Hilton fire, prompted Governor Robert List to mandate statewide sprinkler, smoke-detector, and exit-map requirements, reshaping U.S. hotel fire safety.
