Meta automation error

Meta suspended the official No Kings Coalition Instagram account during nationwide protests on October 17, 2026.
The coalition posted a statement on Instagram demanding an explanation from Meta.
Meta said an automated system mistakenly flagged the account because of high-frequency posting.
The coalition organized more than 3,000 nonpartisan early-voting events across the United States that day.
Co-founder Ezra Levin reported the suspension occurred at the peak of the day-of-action.

Senators demand investigation

Meta suspended the official No Kings Coalition Instagram account during nationwide protests on October 17, 2026.
The shutdown was framed as tech-censorship of progressive activists, prompting Senator Bernie Sanders to cite billionaire media ownership concerns.
Meta said an automated safety filter triggered by high-frequency posting cut admin access at 1:30 p.m., halting updates for four hours.
Senators Chris Murphy and Chris Van Hollen called the suspension outrageous and announced a congressional investigation.

History

Historical Context

On January 8 2021, Twitter permanently suspended former President Donald Trump’s @realDonaldTrump account, removing roughly 88 million followers after the Capitol riot and prompting Section 230 hearings. The October 17 2026 Meta filter block of the No Kings Coalition’s Instagram account sparked a Senate investigation led by Bernie Sanders and others, extending congressional scrutiny of platform censorship that began with the 2021 bans.
