Southern California Wildfires: Status and Containment Update
By Drooid · · How we work
Overview of the Active Blazes
Cal Fire identified three primary wildfires burning in Southern California as of the latest update: the Norte Fire in the San Juan Capistrano area, the Bryson Fire near Malibu, and the Henderson Fire in northern San Diego County. All three ignitions were driven by strong Santa Ana winds and unusually high temperatures, conditions that have begun to subside.
Fire-Specific Details
- Norte Fire – Originated in the hills near the San Juan Capistrano–San Clemente boundary. It has consumed roughly 570 acres and is approximately 25 % contained. Seven homes were damaged or destroyed, and at least two firefighters sustained injuries.
- Bryson Fire – Started near Encinal Canyon Road in Malibu. The blaze reached about 150 acres, with containment rising from 17 % to 68 % over a 24-hour period early in the incident. All evacuation orders have been lifted and the temporary emergency shelter closed.
- Henderson Fire – The largest of the three, it has burned over 3,000 acres in northern San Diego County. Containment stands at roughly 50 % after steady progress by crews. Portions of the 5 Freeway near Camp Pendleton were intermittently closed during the fire’s growth.
Containment Efforts and Resources
Firefighters across the region have focused on increasing containment percentages while protecting structures. Cal Fire reported that containment for each fire improved steadily as wind speeds decreased and temperatures returned to near-normal levels. Evacuation orders for all three incidents have been lifted, though some areas remain closed to the public, including the burn scar of the Norte Fire and sections of Via La Mirada.
Impact and Ongoing Concerns
The combined incidents have resulted in multiple home losses, injuries to firefighters, and temporary roadway closures. While the immediate weather drivers have eased, Cal Fire noted that the cause of these week-long wildfires remains undetermined.
Outlook
With wind and heat subsiding, containment is expected to continue advancing in the coming days. Cal Fire will maintain monitoring of the burn areas and stand ready to respond should conditions deteriorate again.
