History

Historical Context

On March 15 1999, Amtrak’s southbound City of New Orleans struck a semi-truck at a Bourbonnais, Illinois grade crossing, killing 11 of the 207 passengers aboard. The NTSB blamed the driver’s disregard for signals and urged stricter crossing enforcement and event-recorders, prompting nationwide safety reforms that later shaped responses to similar truck-train collisions.
