History

Historical Context

The 1995 Oklahoma City bombing on April 19 destroyed the Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 civilians and injuring over 600 responders. FBI Director Louis Freeh led investigators who recovered 4,800 lb of explosives and linked Timothy McVeigh, sentenced to 19 life terms for the attack. Similarly, the 2024 Wichita crash, Kelsey Miller hit a crowd, killed 6-year-old Adrian Cole, prompting Mayor Lily Wu and attorney to suspend, order toxicology tests. Both tragedies show that sudden violence in public venues forces city officials to tighten safety protocols, often spurring nationwide security and driver-screening reforms.
