History

Historical Context

In 2013 the NFL and NFLPA settled a class-action lawsuit for $765 million, prompting the league to adopt a standardized concussion protocol that placed independent neuro-trauma consultants on each team’s staff. Rule changes and spotters introduced since 2011 cut on-field concussion diagnoses by about 15 % by 2022. The protocol is now being tested on rookie Ladd McConkey after his 2024 concussion with the Los Angeles Chargers.
