History

Historical Context

In 1975, the Pittsburgh Steelers, coached by Chuck Noll, forged the “Steel Curtain” defense that drove a 12-2 record and a Super Bowl IX win. Defensive tackle “Mean Joe” Greene recorded 12 sacks and 8 forced fumbles, while the unit limited opponents to 9.5 points per game, the league’s lowest. Like the Steelers’ surge, the 2026 Tennessee Titans leaned on a defensive breakout—Jeffery Simmons’ two sacks and forced fumble sparked a 26-20 comeback over Indianapolis. That historic defensive template reminds franchises that a single dominant front can shift momentum, prompting modern teams to prioritize pass-rush talent in roster building.
