History

Historical Context

Title IX, enacted June 8 1972 after hearings by Rep. Edith Green and Sen. Birch Bayh, barred sex discrimination in federally funded education and spurred a more than 450 percent rise in women’s college sports by 2006. The law’s oversight, now handled by the Department of Education’s OCR, frames the October 17 2026 Duke assault controversy, prompting the ACC to consider stricter penalties.
