History

Historical Context

On 3 December 1984, a methyl isocyanate leak from Union Carbide India Limited’s Bhopal plant exposed over half a million people, killing at least 2,259 instantly and injuring thousands. The Indian Supreme Court’s 1989 ruling forced UCC to pay $470 million and prompted stricter national chemical-safety regulations. Those precedents now guide courts as they pursue new prosecutions for toxic-substance violations.
