Security Breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport: Fence Damage Sparks Investigation

By Drooid · · How we work

Background – Earlier Drone Incident in August

In early August, an explosives-laden drone was discovered on the grounds of Leipzig/Halle Airport. German authorities attributed the attempted attack to Russia, a claim Moscow denied. The drone was found near Ukrainian cargo aircraft that had been relocated to the airport after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Incident Details

Late on Saturday night, police discovered a large hole cut through a fence surrounding the airport’s north runway. The damage was reported shortly before 11 p.m. Police said evidence suggests a vehicle most likely plowed through the fence along a publicly accessible road; an accident is also being considered. Emergency responders searched the area but found neither the vehicle nor any unauthorized persons or suspicious objects. The search for the vehicle remains ongoing.

The compromised fence section is on a public road that also serves as an emergency access route. The gate itself was undamaged, and the only camera covering the area is used for airport operations and does not store video footage. Authorities confirmed that the fence complies with national and international safety standards and is inspected regularly.

Official Statements & Responses

Police described the event as a “security-related incident” and temporarily closed the north runway. Airport spokesperson Uwe Schuhart said the airport’s two-runway configuration allowed passenger and cargo traffic to continue without restriction, as operations shifted to the south runway. He noted that three Russian Antonov cargo planes barred from take-off since 2022 are stationed in the northern section, while up to six Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft are based in the southern section, farther from the breach.

Ongoing Investigation and Unresolved Questions

Police have not identified the vehicle responsible, and no tire or brake marks have been reported. It remains unclear whether the breach resulted from sabotage, an accidental collision, or another cause. Authorities have also not determined whether unauthorized individuals accessed the airport grounds. A key question is whether the fence breach is connected to the August drone incident; officials say any link is “completely unclear.” The earlier accusation that Russia was behind the drone attack has not been revisited in relation to the new breach.

Impact on Airport Operations

Despite the north runway closure, the airport maintained normal flight schedules because the south runway remained operational. No passenger or cargo delays were reported, and compliance with safety regulations was reaffirmed by the spokesperson.

What’s Next

Police have announced additional search operations with extra personnel to locate the missing vehicle and continue examining the fence site for forensic evidence. The investigation will assess all possible scenarios, including sabotage, accident, or unauthorized entry. No further runway closures have been announced, and the airport continues to operate under heightened security measures while the inquiry proceeds.
