McLaren to Sell Five Iconic Formula 1 Cars
By Drooid · · How we work
Sale Overview
McLaren Racing announced that it will place five fully-functioning Formula 1 cars from its heritage collection up for individual sale. The vehicles, which span the team’s championship-winning era from 1991 to 2023, will be offered through British specialist dealer Tom Hartley Jr. McLaren says the cars will be prepared for new owners, with older examples undergoing full restorations before delivery.
Cars and Their Provenance
The lot includes two 1991 MP4/6A chassis powered by Honda V12 engines that were raced by Gerhard Berger and later tested by Ayrton Senna. A 2012 MP4/27A chassis, raced by Jenson Button and tested by Lewis Hamilton, is also part of the sale. The two most recent cars are a 2021 MCL35M chassis driven by Lando Norris to podium finishes, and a 2023 MCL37A-03 chassis that Norris piloted to victories in Singapore and Japan; the latter was also test-driven by actor Brad Pitt in 2025.
Pricing and Sale Mechanics
McLaren indicated that the cars are expected to start around $12 million and could reach $23 million per vehicle. Reuters reported that market estimates place the values between £5 million (approximately AUD $9.6 million) and £10 million (approximately AUD $19.1 million). There is no set deadline for purchase, and Hartley Jr. emphasizes that each car will be sold individually to “the right homes.”
Official Statements & Responses
Hartley Jr. highlighted the rarity of acquiring race-driven Grand Prix cars directly from the manufacturer and noted his prior handling of Bernie Ecclestone’s 69-car collection, which fetched a reported £500 million in 2025.
