History

Historical Context

The 2010 Allahabad Kumbh Mela stampede, which killed 42 pilgrims and injured dozens, followed a history of deadly crowds, notably the 1954 Kumbh tragedy that claimed about 1,000 lives and a 2003 Nashik crush that left 39 dead. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s condolence and a state probe echoed earlier calls for stricter festival safety.
