Story summary
- On 19 October 1988 Home Secretary Douglas Hurd announced a ban on broadcasting the voices of Sinn Féin and ten Irish republican or loyalist paramilitary groups on UK television and radio. The measure, lasting until September 1994, responded to escalating Troubles violence and aimed to stop those groups exploiting the media for political gain.
