History

Historical Context

The Second Intifada began in September 2000 after Ariel Sharon’s Temple Mount visit, sparking clashes that left about 3,000 Palestinians and 1,000 Israelis dead. The uprising also prompted security measures such as the West Bank barrier started in 2002 and heightened settler activity in the occupied territories. Today’s arrest of ten Israeli settlers for assaulting a journalist reflects the lingering cycle of violence first unleashed during that period.
