History

Historical Context

The 1967 USS Forrestal fire, ignited on 29 July 1967 aboard the carrier off Vietnam, killed 134 sailors and injured over 1,000. The U.S. Navy, under Admiral John McCain, spent $100 million on damage control and instituted new ammunition safety protocols for future operations. Similarly, the Oct. 17 2026 grass fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, investigated by RCMP and noted by Defense Minister David McGuinty, echoes the blaze. Both incidents prompted national mourning, flag-half-staff orders, and reinforced stricter live-munition safety measures across NATO forces worldwide.
