Fatal Collisions and Casualties

On Oct 19, two separate maritime incidents resulted in the deaths of twelve migrants in the northeastern Aegean Sea.

  • Off the coast of Lesbos, a speedboat carrying migrants collided with the port side of a Greek coast-guard patrol vessel near Agrilia. Six people – four men, a woman and an infant – were killed; eight survivors were taken to hospital. Authorities arrested a 37-year-old Turkish national among the survivors, identifying him as the suspected smuggler and operator of the speedboat.
  • Off Samos, a migrant boat capsized roughly four nautical miles north of the island after a sudden manoeuvre. Five men and a woman drowned; fourteen men survived. Police detained an Iranian national from the surviving group on suspicion of migrant-smuggling.

A combined total of 22 people were rescued across both incidents, and a search-and-rescue operation remains underway.

Background on Greece’s Migration Context

Greece has long served as a primary entry point for migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. During the 2015-2016 migration crisis, nearly 1 million arrivals landed on Greek islands, mainly from Turkey. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, arrivals have fallen sharply this year, with 25,000 recorded as of Oct 11 2026, compared with 42,000 in 2025. The government has pursued a “zero tolerance” policy toward people-smuggling, a stance intensified after the 2015-2016 surge.

Official Statements & Government Response

Greece’s Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Vassilis Kikilias blamed migrant traffickers for the deaths and reiterated the government’s uncompromising stance. He posted on X:

“The tragedy that unfolded last night in the maritime area of Lesbos fills us with sorrow and rage. Six people lost their lives, including an infant, due to the criminal actions of modern-day traffickers,” — Vassilis Kikilias, greece's shipping minister

Kikilias added that early evidence indicated the speedboat struck the coast-guard vessel’s left side with its bow and that investigations into the exact circumstances were ongoing.

Data & Statistics

  • Deaths: 12 (six per incident) – includes one infant.
  • Survivors: 22 (14 from Samos, 8 from Lesbos).
  • Arrests: Iranian national (suspected smuggler) and Turkish national (operator of Lesbos speedboat).
  • Rescue operations: Ongoing search-and-rescue missions in both maritime zones.

What’s Next

Greek authorities continue to investigate the collisions, focusing on the role of smuggling networks. The coast guard has indicated that further arrests may follow as the inquiry proceeds, while rescue teams remain on alert for any additional missing persons.
