Speed Increase on the Orange Line
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced that the Orange Line will now run at speeds of up to 55 mph in both directions between North Station and Assembly. This marks the first time the line has been authorized to travel at that speed along this segment, surpassing the previous maximum of 40 mph.
Background and Recent Improvements
The speed boost follows a series of infrastructure upgrades carried out under the MBTA’s Track Improvement Program, which spanned 2023-2024. Earlier, in August 2025, the agency reported that Orange Line trains had already reached 55 mph between Oak Grove and Assembly after similar work. The recent enhancements include the removal of slow zones, upgrades to signal systems, and accessibility improvements, all aimed at modernizing the system.
Official Statements
Interim Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phil Eng said the upgrades were part of a broader effort to make travel more efficient and give riders “more time in their days.” Eng credited the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s leadership for the system-wide improvements that enabled the new speed limits.
Impact on Service
The MBTA claims that overall Orange Line service has risen by 76 percent on weekdays since the winter of 2023, with trip times decreasing as a result of the higher speeds. Faster travel between North Station and Assembly is expected to shorten commute times for riders along the corridor.
Data & Statistics
- New top speed: 55 mph (previously 40 mph)
- Service increase: 76 percent weekday ridership growth since winter 2023
- Speed capability demonstrated in August 2025 between Oak Grove and Assembly
These changes reflect the MBTA’s ongoing commitment to modernizing Boston’s transit infrastructure and improving passenger experience.
